 Today (3 January) a group of Sadarak region Heydarabad village residents who complained to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Autonomous Republic Internal Minister A.Ahmadov about illegal actions of Sadarak region Police Department Chief Fariz Mammadov, Deputy Chief Dagbeyi Alakbarov and Criminal Investigation Department Chief Anar Aliyev were taken to Sadarak region Police Department and were subjected to pressure. Police asked the residents to take their complaints back.First degree invalid, 58 year old Hasanov Ismayil Suleyman oglu, who refused to do so, and his wife, second degree invalid, 58 year old Hasanova Khanimzar Abo gizi were seated on a police car and taken to an unknown direction. Complainants Ahmadov Nazim and Valiyev Ibrahim are still being held in the police department. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety Nakhchivan correspondents were told this by the first degree invalid Hasanov Elvin Ismayil oglu. “At 11:00 Criminal Investigation Department Chief Anar Aliyev called my parents out from home and took them to Sadarak region police department,” said E.Hasanov. “There they threatened my parents and demanded that they take their complaints back. Then they were taken to a police unit. When my father refused to take his complaint back, Police Chief Fariz Mammadov ordered police, ‘Take them to a madhouse.’ Then my parents were seated on a police car and taken to an unknown direction.” On 24 December 2008 a group of youth was taken to Sadarak region Police Department and was held there until the next morning. Their parents wrote a complaint letter because the youth was subjected to physical, moral and psychological pressure there. IRFS contacted Sadarak region Police Department regarding the incident. However, Department Chief Fariz Mammadov told our employee, “Go, do your own business”, and hung up the phone. Our correspondent called 49-01-01, and the person on the other end said, “No one is being held here. This is the Department. Police does not give information during operations. Go appeal to Internal Ministry press service.” Deputy Chief Dagbeyi Alakbarov told our employee that the two were released after they were interrogated, and Hasanov Ismayil Suleyman oglu and Hasanova Khanimzar Abo gizi were taken to Autonomous Republic Internal Ministry to meet with the minister. We were told by Autonomous Republic Internal Ministry that they were unaware of the incident and nobody was brought there. According to doctor on duty at the Psychological Diseases Dispensary Bagirov Allahverdi, persons by name Hasanov Ismayil Suleyman oglu and Hasanova Khanimzar Abo gizi haven’t been brought to the hospital.
